My first blog entry for 2010 and I’m delighted its about the
thrill I’ve experienced these last few weeks. As I move into what must be the
second half of completing my script the process is not only getting easier but
unbelievably satisfying. My on-screen characters are developing in ways I didn’t
think possible. Not because of their limitations but the perception of my own
as a writer.
I’ve written many articles and yes it’s a pleasant feeling to
complete a task, develop rounded, well formed arguments, raise questions, pose theories
and introduce doubt but perhaps you will have already realised I am referring
to my work writing commercially.
I’ve listened to, read and watched writers discuss their (script
writing) work and it surprises me how few mention any degree of enjoyment as
they put pen to paper (ok, fingers to keyboard – der!). If there is any thrill
its directed at the script which in itself suggests that either my feelings are
typical for a novice or as professionals their focus remains in the end product,
not the process.
Odd really. Actors love to talk about the movie (sometimes
specifically about the script) but mostly about acting alongside so and so, and
being directed by the great and good whatshisname etc
Hey ho (sorry, remnants from Christmas) – all I can do is
share my experiences.
Happy New Year one and all.
